Dan Cammish, the reigning and three-time Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion, is making an exciting and a very welcome return to the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship for the 2022 season after today, Wednesday, 15th December, being revealed as the first driver for the new NAPA Racing entry.
Run by vastly experienced BTCC squad Motorbase Performance, NAPA Racing will debut next year in the UK’s premier motor racing category and the brand is already making waves by signing Leeds driver Cammish – undoubtedly one of the country’s most exceptional racers.
The 32-year-old will spearhead a major title push with NAPA Racing next season, driving one of the Motorbase Performance engineered and prepared hybrid-powered Ford Focus ST cars. It will mark his first full season in the BTCC since 2020, when he was a four-time race winner and title contender.
Sealing a record-breaking third Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship crown this year, having previously won the coveted title in 2015 and 2016, Cammish actually started 2021 with a one-off outing in the BTCC during the series curtain-raiser at Thruxton – finishing second in round two.
His debut season in touring cars came in 2018 and after impressing on his switch from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, claiming two outright wins in his rookie season, Cammish starred in 2019. Taking two race wins and 12 other podiums, he only missed out on a famous title victory by a mere two points after a heart-breaking mechanical failure on the penultimate lap of the final race.
In 2020, along with four more race victories and six other podiums Cammish was third in the overall driver standings for the second consecutive year – only two points away from ending the season as Vice-Champion.
NAPA Racing’s arrival in the British Touring Car Championship with Motorbase was announced just two days ago, and the partnership is eyeing big things together when the new season gets underway at Donington Park in the East Midlands on 23rd/24th April.
One of the most prominent and successful automotive parts brands in North America, NAPA was founded almost 100 years ago. Introduced into the UK in 2019 by the Alliance Automotive Group, there are more than 280 stockists nationwide. NAPA has a rich history in the US Motorsport world, sponsoring some of the biggest formulas out there, such as NASCAR and the IndyCar series. Now, the prestigious automotive parts brand partners with Motorbase for 2022 BTCC season.
“Dan was a key element for our plans going into 2022. It’s a big year for us in many ways and we acknowledged that we needed a specific type of driver, of which there aren’t many around. In Dan we have someone we can really work with and rely on his talent and experience, along with his character. Dan had another really successful season in 2021 in Porsche Carrera Cup GB and he has a lot of unfinished business in the BTCC, so he’s in the right place right now and knows exactly what to expect from us at NAPA Racing. As a driver and team our targets are the same, we’re expecting success on and off track and we aim to enjoy the journey together. The whole team is buzzing with excitement at the moment, there is a really good feeling about the future of Motorbase.”
“I am very happy to be joining the NAPA Racing team ahead of the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season. It was obvious from the first time of meeting Motorbase owner Pete Osborne I wanted to be part of this program, and after spending quality time with the team it is clear this is a very exciting time for all involved. Everyone is working hard to give the team the best possible chance and it fills me with confidence when I see the work taking place behind the scenes. I am
incredibly proud to be representing NAPA in UK motorsport and I believe this is just the start of a long and successful partnership. This is a new chapter for me in the BTCC and I can’t wait to get started and pick up where I left off.”
“Dan is a phenom on the BTCC racing circuit. We are confident that he will bring his years of expertise and significant talent to the table to kickstart the NAPA Racing movement in the UK. This is the start of an enthusiastic partnership between NAPA and Motorbase Performance.”
